The "Formula One Class" yachts were developed from a concept which evolved following the exciting spectacle of 12-meter fleet racing off Fremantle in 1986 prior to America's Cup. An event was than designed on two principles. The first was to attract the participation of the Worlds finest yachtsmen and to focus international media upon them as they competed for a prestigious trophy and generous prise money. The second was to raise the profile on international yachting as a spectacle sport and generate increasing support from sport followers. Thus emerged the event to be known as "The Formula One Class World Yachting Grand Prix" which was immediately followed by the selection of the "Formula One Class" yacht designed by Tony Castro and Bruce Nelson to provide competitors and owners with a 52' racing yacht with the essential feature of a one design class incorporating exciting performance, simplicity of layout and sensible cost which includes the yacht's transporter for ease of roll-on roll-off shipping between venues.
